Thomas W Heldt, age 99, passed away March 15 at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac. Born to Otto W. and Meta Heldt (nee Seidensticker) on January 28, 1927, he was the younger of two children. He attended Columbus School at age 4 to avoid having to take afternoon naps, graduating from Campbellsport High School at age 16. He served his country for several years in the Merchant Marines during WWII. He married Therese A. Becker, his high school sweetheart; they enjoyed 62 years together. After service he worked for 20 years as a signalman for Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He then started work for Wisconsin Electric Power Company in the stock room and gradually rose to work dispatcher before he retired. He also owned and operated the Heldt Store with his wife Tess. He was a devout member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Campbellsport where he devoted many hours of service. In retirement he rode his bike over 35,000 miles and enjoyed penning his memoirs of his life. He will be remembered for his generosity in helping family, friends and neighbors, and his church with any project they were working on. He and Otto built a lake cottage that was the site of many family vacations and celebrations for over 50 years.
He will be sadly missed by his daughters Donna (Don) Streiff, Lois (Patrick) Stapleton, and Heidi (David) Janous. He is also survived by grandchildren Jenny (Adam) Wiedmeyer, Andrea (Ben) Buss, Sean Stapleton, Ryan (Hannah) Stapleton, Nick Janous, Allie (Jimmy) Morrow and great-grandchildren Nathan Wiedmeyer, Noah and Greta Buss, Jack Janous, Rio and Kai Morrow. He is further survived by nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Tess, and brother Robert Heldt.
The family wishes to especially thank his close neighbors and guardian angels, Steve and Diane Schickert, Doris and Ken Schwartz, and Tom and Nettie Weis. We also thank the ambulance crews and hospital staff, and clinic PA, Jennifer, for their attentive care at the end of his life.
Visitation for Tom will be Saturday, April 11th from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 350 S. Helena St. Campbellsport.
A Memorial Service will follow at 12:00 PM at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Cerny officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Matthews Cemetery, Campbellsport.
