Merrie Carol (Hau) Twohig, born on Christmas Day in 1943, entered eternal life surrounded by the love of her family on February 11th, 2026. The cherished only child of Clarence and Millie (Brandt) Hau, Merrie brought light, warmth, and joy to all who knew her.

A bright, beautiful student, Merrie attended St. Mary’s Elementary School then proceeded to St. Mary’s Springs Academy where she was crowned homecoming queen and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1962. She went on to earn her degree in Elementary Education from Mount Mary College in 1966. On August 5, 1967, she married the love of her life, Timothy G. Twohig, establishing an adoring, joyous, dynamic marriage that became the steady foundation of their large and loving family. Merrie taught in the Milwaukee Public School System while Tim finished dental school. After his graduation, they moved to Louisiana where Tim completed his service in the US Air Force and later planted their roots back home in Fond du Lac.

Merrie’s life was centered on her family above all else. She was the devoted mother of six children: Mark (Faye) Twohig, Anne (Greg) Brunette, Catherine (Chris) McGalloway, Tim (Kelly) Twohig, Sean (Keri) Twohig, and Christopher (Samantha) Twohig. Her legacy continues in her sixteen grandchildren: Elizabeth (Shep) Griswold, Joseph Brunette, Joshua Brunette, Teresa Brunette, Lauren (Chris) Chambers, Christian (fiancé Talya Loken) McGalloway, Megan (Adam) Hopper, Donovan McGalloway, Quentin (Brianna) Twohig-Williston, Millie Twohig, Colin Twohig, Gavin Twohig, Declan Twohig, Cleary Twohig, George Twohig, and Layne Twohig. The next generation has begun - with two great-grandchildren, Beatrice Chambers and Dean Williston, plus two more expected in the coming weeks.

Deeply committed to her faith, friends, and community, Merrie was actively involved in the St. Joseph, St. Mary, and St. Mary’s Springs school communities, Holy Family Catholic Church as well as Sigma and the dental auxiliary. She regularly made herself available to anybody who needed a ride, a hand, a few bucks, someone to talk to, or a shoulder to cry on. Yet her most enduring work happened at home. Merrie was a constant teacher of grammar and academics, but more deeply of Catholic values, right and wrong, and personal responsibility. She corrected mistakes with firmness and clarity, always guiding her children and grandchildren toward lives rooted in faith, integrity, and love. She approached daily meals, family gatherings and vacations with careful attention to detail so the important things - togetherness, prayer, and so much laughter - could take center stage.

She is survived by her beloved husband Dr. Tim Twohig, her children and their spouses, her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many dear cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends

Merrie lived a life of steadfast faith, purposeful guidance, and profound dedication to those she loved. Her Christmas birth was a gift, and her years of teaching and nurturing remain a lasting blessing to her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in the eternal peace she so faithfully pointed others toward, forever held in the arms of God, whom she served so well.
