Obituary

“

Her commitment and dedication to supporting her family and parish truly reflected who she was as a person.

Elizabeth “Betty” Welsh, 85, was peacefully called to her heavenly home on Thursday, October 8, 2026 at SSM St. Mary’s Hospital Madison, with family at her side.

She was born to Ambrose N. Wettstein and Elizabeth (Lizzy) Kraus Wettstein on July 8, 1941. On April 15, 1961 she married James B. Welsh III at St. Mary’s church in Eden. She attended Hayes Grade School with her sisters and they walked to and from school daily. She graduated from St. Mary’s Springs Academy at the age of 16. After high school her first job was at the First State Bank in Campbellsport. Later she transferred to the Eden Branch, where she thoroughly enjoyed serving customers.

In 1962, Betty began her career as a homemaker after the birth of their first child. She enjoyed motherhood and her growing family; soon there was never a dull moment in the house. She loved playing with her children, teaching them right from wrong; supporting and encouraging them as they grew.

She was always willing to lend a helping hand with kindness and a smile, as well as a joke or two. As her children grew, her volunteering opportunities did as well. Her commitment and dedication to supporting her family and parish truly reflected who she was as a person.

When asked how she was, her standard reply was “good for shit”.

She also enjoyed supporting her children and grandchildren at their various sporting events. With many nightly trips shuffling the kids back and forth to Campbellsport, she used to joke she was going to meet herself on the road and wave. She didn’t hesitate to play a practical joke on someone, like snatching a purse from the lady in front of her during a softball game. She also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and going to the casino. Betty greeted people with a smile on her face, had a great sense of humor and quick wit. In her recent years, as her steps slowed and body aches increased, when asked how she was, her standard reply was “good for shit”. This response became very well known.

Survivors include her children: Kathy (Nathan) Krewald, Mike (Kim) Welsh, Tom (Julie) Welsh, Joe (Jackie) Welsh, Sue (Albey) Welsh-Rivas, Barb Welsh, Bart Welsh (Corina). Grandchildren: Kacie (Mike) Dickmann, John (Kaitlyn) Dwyer, JeanLuc Rivas, Cora, Harper and Aubrey Welsh. Great grandchildren: Miles and James Dickmann, Letilyn, Tenley, Beckett & baby on the way Dwyer. Sisters: Rosalie Engels, Louise (Jerry), Ottery and Carol (Jim) Mooney. In-laws: Ann Gustafson and Bonnie Narges,

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, Donna (Gerry) Serwe, Charles Gustafson, Kenny Narges, and Jack Engels.

The family extends a special thank you to the Eden First Responders, Campbellsport Ambulance, the critical care team at SSM St. Mary’s Hospital Madison, and their family and friends for their love and support.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to be directed to Shepherd of the Hills School, Eden Firemen’s Association, Fr. Mike Shea at Sarnelli House, or a charity of your choice in honor of Betty.

Visitation for Betty will be Tuesday, October 13th from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church, W1562 County Road B, Eden.

A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 AM at Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church with Rev. Mark Jones officiating. A private burial will occur at a later date at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Armstrong.
