Gerhard Robert Schulz

Gerhard “Gary” Schulz, 87, of Fond du Lac passed away Friday Aug. 14, 2009 at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac. He was born on a farm near Batavia in Sheboygan County on Oct. 2, 1921 the son of Fred and Anna (nee Hartwig) Schulz. He attended LaFollette Grade School and Sherman Center Lutheran School and graduated from Random Lake High School in 1939. His interest in photography began while in high school, developing film and prints in the farm kitchen at night. He took courses in photography and journalism at Milwaukee Vocational School in 1940 and was employed at Schuster’s advertising department when Pearl Harbor was attacked Dec. 7, 1941. He enlisted one month later at Randolph Field, Texas and was commissioned in August and spent 28 months overseas in New Guinea and the Philippines. After suffering from spinal meningitis overseas in Leyte, he became a Photo Officer at Eglin Field, Florida until the war ended in 1945. Gary attended the UW-Madison and received a BA Degree in Journalism in 1949 and covered the UW campus for 37 years for the News Service including research projects and all sports events. He also taught photography courses at UW-Whitewater and UW-Madison. He retired as an Assoc. Professor Emeritus and a Lt. Col. USAF. He married Mavis Koepke on Oct. 1, 1949 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1999. After retirement, they traveled in the United States, to Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. They are members of Hope Lutheran Church in Fond du Lac. Survivors include his wife Mavis, six nephews and two nieces, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Anna Schulz, two brothers Henry and Albert and two sisters Lydia and Alma. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday Aug. 18, 2009 at Noon at the Twohig Funeral Home, 305 Fond du Lac Ave. Fond du Lac. Rev. Arthur Callies will officiate and entombment will be in Shrine of the Risen Christ Mausoleum in Calvary Cemetery, Fond du Lac. Memorials are appreciated to Hope Lutheran Building Fund. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until time of services at the funeral home on Tuesday. God Bye for now until we meet again.
